The Brother DR-3605 drum unit is an integral part of your laser printer, and needs to be replaced around about every two to three TN-3605xxl toners, three to four TN-3605xl toners, five to six TN-3605 toners or nine to ten TN-3420 toners, you have used. Your printer will warn you when the drum will soon need to be renewed. The drum unit does not contain any toner - it's function is to transfer the image onto the page. With Brother laser products the toner and drum work independently - this is cheaper to run than those where the two units are combined. If one runs out, you don't have to replace both items simultaneously, substantially reducing waste. Ensure crisp clear prints every time using Original Brother consumables.

A drum unit transfers the image onto the paper in a laser printer. Not all printers need a separate drum unit. Drum units are used in conjunction with toner cartridges that do not have the drum unit included. Mono printers have one drum, colour printers can either have one drum for all four colours, or four drums (one for each colour - black, cyan, magenta and yellow).
